Caterham (2012-Present)[]
2012[]
Downton was announced as a Caterham driver shortly before the start of the new season. He impressed on his first outing, qualifying 18th, ahead of seven-time World Champion Michael Schumacher and having a solid race to fight with such names as Schumacher, as well as defending Champion Sebastian Vettel . He eventually finished 18th.
Downton qualified a career best fifth place in a wet qualifying session for Malaysia. This was the first time Caterham have made Q3 since joining F1 in 2010. The race wasn't so good as a series of problems left him 13th, being passed by teammate Heikki Kovalainen on the final lap.
